The travel industry ended 2018 on a high note, adding 21,600 jobs in December. This marks the largest monthly job increase of the year, reaching a level of just over 8.7 million travel-related jobs. Job gains in December were seen in most travel industry sectors, including lodging, food and beverage, attractions, gambling and recreation.

Total non-farm payroll employment increased by 312,000 in December and the unemployment rate rose to 3.9 percent. In 12 months of 2018, travel-generated employment rose by 102,300, compared with a gain of just 28,700 in 2017. Travel contributed 3.9% of total non-farm jobs added in 2018.
